Janitorial Service Worker — Independent Contractor

Millennials for Sustainability (MFS) is seeking dependable and detail-oriented Janitorial Service Workers to join our network of independent contractors. Contractors will provide professional cleaning, sanitation, waste-management, and facility-support services for MFS clients, which may include schools, childcare and adult-care facilities, offices, government buildings, commercial properties, community organizations, healthcare-related environments, and other public or private facilities.

We are looking for professionals and small cleaning businesses that understand that maintaining a clean facility is not simply about appearance—it contributes to the health, safety, functionality, and overall experience of everyone using the space.

Responsibilities

Janitorial Service Workers may be contracted to perform:

• Routine cleaning and sanitizing of assigned facilities.

• Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and floor care.

• Cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and replenishing supplies.

• Cleaning offices, classrooms, common areas, breakrooms, hallways, and other assigned spaces.

• Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

• Emptying trash and recycling receptacles and replacing liners.

• Waste collection, sorting, and disposal according to site requirements.

• Cleaning windows, glass, doors, fixtures, and other surfaces.

• Performing scheduled deep-cleaning services.

• Responding to spills and other routine custodial needs.

• Maintaining organized janitorial closets, supplies, and equipment.

• Inspecting assigned areas and reporting maintenance, sanitation, or safety concerns.

• Following established procedures for cleaning chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

• Properly using PPE and commercial cleaning equipment.

• Following infection-control or enhanced sanitation procedures when required by a facility.

• Documenting completed services through checklists, photographs, work orders, or service reports when required.

• Coordinating professionally with MFS project managers, facility personnel, clients, and other contractors.

Specific duties will vary depending on the facility and contracted scope of work.

Required Qualifications

Janitorial Service Workers must:

• Have reliable personal transportation to and from assigned client locations.

• Provide their own professional cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment necessary to complete accepted assignments unless a specific MFS contract states otherwise.

• Maintain adequate supplies of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, trash liners, microfiber products, PPE, and other routine janitorial materials appropriate to the work.

• Have access to basic janitorial equipment such as a vacuum, mop system, buckets, brooms, dusting equipment, and other tools appropriate to their accepted scope of work.

• Safely store, transport, label, and use cleaning chemicals according to manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements.

• Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for applicable chemicals when required.

• Keep equipment clean, maintained, and in safe working condition.

• Have experience performing commercial cleaning, janitorial, custodial, sanitation, housekeeping, or facility-maintenance services.

• Be physically capable of prolonged standing and walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and safely lifting moderate loads.

• Be able to follow written scopes of work, cleaning schedules, checklists, and client-specific sanitation requirements.

• Be dependable, detail-oriented, and capable of completing assignments independently within established timeframes.

• Maintain appropriate business/general liability insurance and any additional coverage required by an individual MFS contract.

• Maintain any applicable business registrations, licenses, permits, or certifications required for the services being performed.

• Be able to provide proof of insurance and other contractor documentation when requested.

• Meet any background screening, security, identification, or facility-access requirements associated with individual assignments.

Contractors are expected to arrive at each assignment with their own reliable transportation, cleaning supplies, equipment, tools, and PPE necessary to complete the contracted scope of work unless MFS specifically identifies certain materials or equipment as client-provided.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to contractors with:

• 2+ years of professional commercial cleaning or janitorial experience.

• Previous experience working as an independent contractor, subcontractor, or cleaning-business owner.

• Experience servicing schools, childcare facilities, healthcare environments, government buildings, commercial properties, offices, senior-care facilities, or other high-traffic environments.

• Experience with commercial floor-care equipment.

• Experience with carpet cleaning, floor stripping/waxing or refinishing, pressure washing, or other specialized cleaning services.

• Knowledge of OSHA workplace-safety practices.

• Bloodborne Pathogens training.

• First Aid/CPR/AED certification.

• Experience with infection-control and cross-contamination prevention practices.

• Experience with environmentally responsible or green cleaning practices and products.

• Familiarity with waste reduction, recycling, and responsible waste-management procedures.

• Experience completing commercial or government scopes of work.

• Ability to provide additional qualified workers or a cleaning crew for larger contracts.

• Strong professional references and a demonstrated record of reliable service.

Independent Contractor Requirements

This is an independent contractor opportunity, and hours or assignments are not guaranteed. Work may become available based on MFS contract awards, client needs, geographic location, facility schedules, contractor capabilities, and availability.

Contractors operate independently and are generally responsible for maintaining their own business registrations, insurance, transportation, equipment, supplies, PPE, taxes, and operating expenses, unless a specific project or contract states otherwise.

Assignments may occur during daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, or facility-closure hours, depending on client requirements. Contractors will be able to evaluate applicable project requirements before accepting an assignment.

Some facilities—particularly schools, healthcare environments, government facilities, childcare programs, and care facilities—may require additional background screening, orientation, identification, or site-access procedures.
